(They) have a better park than most towns in California.”
Pro skater and Montana native Ryan Simonetti spent the better part of the past 15 years in New Mexico and Los Angeles but recently returned to his hometown of Great Falls to start an indoor park, his third such endeavor. When he christened his new Wild Style skate park in late November, he flew in his friend Steve-O to participate in the festivities. “I just figured I wanted to take a little break from Los Angeles and Hollywood and I always wanted to do an indoor park (in Great Falls),” said Simonetti, who last year jumped his board over a moving U-Haul rig on “David Letterman.” “I figured the timing was right. It feels good to be back.” His new design is housed in a former antique store overlooking the city, the mountains and the Missouri River. It’s not the biggest skate park you’ll come across, but it’s effective, especially when the temperature drops below zero, a common occurrence in Montana. “There’s really nowhere to ride in the winter out here. When the weather gets bad and snowy, there’s not much to skate,” said Simonetti who mixed designs from his parks in Hollywood and New Mexico to complete his Montana skate spot.
“It was great to see considering it’s a town and not a city. Out of 50,000 people, it was well represented,” said Steve-O, recalling his visit to Great Falls and Simonetti’s skatepark. “The reception on opening day was absolutely killer. Some fucking decent shit and some great skaters. I was surprised. It was my first time in Montana for anything … that I can remember.”
Even though the current skateparks are relatively new, the skating scene in Great Falls goes back more than 30 years. Long before he helped form Pearl Jam as their bassist, Ament was a skater trying to find places to shred in central Montana. Growing up in a small town of 700 just north of Great Falls, Ament cut his teeth by competing at fairs when the sport was still catching on in the ‘70s. “I built my first ramp in the summer of 1977 and saw organized skating at the (Montana) State Fair that summer,” recalled Ament. “I competed in the State Fair contest the next two years in all the events – half pipe, slalom, freestyle and high jump. It seems funny now that there was a high jump. I met people from all over the state, Bozeman, Helena and Havre and found that all of these kids had ramps too. The Great Falls guys were a little older than me and my friends in Havre and were like the Dogtown guys. Long hair, cocky and were the best skaters I’d witnessed until I went to California in 1979.”
Behind one of numerous Pearl Jam gigs in Montana through the years, Ament helped raise $50,000 to build a skatepark in Missoula in western Montana. Why would someone even want to skate when the wind is constantly blowing and the temps can drop below zero at any time during a seven-month period? “The love for it and the dedication to it. The passion and desire to get out there and do it,” answered Simonetti, who grew up in Great Falls and learned to love the sport in the cold. “When I was younger, we’d wear gloves and we’d wear beanies and we’d layer our clothes and our jackets and we’d go skating if it was 20 degrees. Skateboarding, for most all of us that start, it turns into an addiction kind of and you really feed off of it.
